Encode Japanese

July 26th, 2005 by heather

It’s highly unlikely I’ll be writing in Japanese soon, but this writer looked into encoding Japanese with a lang attribute, to tell Google and audio readers like JAWS that what is there is Japanese. At least in 2003, it was too early, read Encoding Japanese.

Instead he finds a solution by wrapping Romaji in a span tag, with a class that makes it italicized and a title=”" attribute to put in a definition. He gives this as an example:

taiheiyō sensō

That’s friendly. It would be great to add this as a quicktag in Wordpress, which would wrap selected text in the span tag, and prompt user to type in title.

Putting that on my list of things to do.

*ahem*

I don’t see why couldn’t start writing in Japanese soon!

Here’s a site for hiragana lessons that are very easy to learn:

and here’s one for katakana as well:

If you want to get started actually typing Japanese into your computer quickly and use Windows XP, I cannot recommend any guide to this more highly than Greggman’s — http://greggman.com/japan/xp-ime/xp-ime.htm#comment96

oh my goodness, you’re right. i can type in japanese!

i use mac os x, so i had to go into the International options in the system preferences (which i got through clicking on the flag near the clock in upper R hand corner). then i activated the kana palette, and also the input methods (romaji, hiragana and katakana).

    and now i can type!
